RAID BIOS and rebuild drives

Replacing drive 0 the correct way

Thankfully we use “real” RAID in all our servers now – IBM branded LSI cards with batteries.

I had to replace a drive 0 in an Intel RAID1 today, and have the site up and running (if slowly during rebuild) right away.

I was sure I replaced the right drive but the thing just wouldn’t boot. I didn’t want to do the rebuild in the RAID BIOS because the site would be down for hours while this happened.

Anyway as it turns out, and this is not in the doco, you need to go into the RAID BIOS which will then offer to mark the new drive as a rebuild drive, then exit, then load the OS and the RAID will continue to build in there…
